Low Level Laser has been approved by the FDA for treatment of
carpal tunnel syndrome. Low Level Laser therapy has been shown
to precipitate a complex set of physiological interactions at
the cellular level that reduces acute inflammation, reduces pain
and accelerates tissue healing. Light Amplification of Stimulated
Emission of Radiation (LASER) is a light beam from the electromagnetic
spectrum. Unlike conventional light sources, a laser beam travels
only in one direction and is monochromic with its photons (little
packets of energy) which are all identical in size, traveling
equidistant in time and space. Low Level Laser therapy has been
investigated and used clinically for over 30 years, mostly in
Eastern Europe and Asia. The ability of lasers to cut and cauterize
during surgery is well known. The same or similar lasers at lower
powers can non-thermally and nondestructively alter cellular function.
This phenomenon, known as laser bio stimulation, is the basis
for the current use of lasers to treat a variety of joint, nerve
and soft tissue conditions.
